How New Cannabis Prohibition Laws Created Crime in Holland

Members of local government in Holland decided to implement stricter marijuana laws which then gave more power to violent street dealers that began to take over the market. When the governments realized this was happening, they eased up on some of the laws again. When the coffeshops were allowed to sell cannabis to tourists again, members of these gangs threatened coffeshop owners because their business was being taken away from them, This video shows footage of one of the street dealers threatening a coffeshop owner and the experience of the person who was filming the confrontation.

Belgium: Quasi-legal cannabis plantations

Belgium: Quasi-legal cannabis plantations

In early May, a law took effect in the Netherlands that allows owners of legalized cannabis cafés in the southern Netherlands to sell the substance only to Dutch residents, no longer to foreigners. Now Belgium’s first cannabis club is enjoying a membership boom.

The possession of marijuana was decriminalized in Belgium over a decade ago, a ruling that sparked the creation of the Cannabis Social Club “Trekt Uw Plant” (“Grow Your Plant”). The club has established a collective cannabis plantation, where each member is allowed to harvest several times a year. Both recreational and medical marijuana users praise the model as a way of avoiding the illegal drug trade – but the club remains a source of controversy.

The Netherlands Runs Out of Criminals.mp4

The Netherlands Runs Out of Criminals.mp4

The Netherlands is extremely safe, but always be cautious in larger cities as Amsterdam or Rotterdam, especially for small crimes such as pick pocketing and smash-and-grab theft with foreign cars. Just behave the way you would do at home and do not be naive. If you are victim of crime always go to the police: they will help you. Check the police section on the city pages for more information.

Prostitution is legal in the Netherlands. Prostitutes need a license and even pay tax. It is based on the view that prostitutes are more victims than criminals. Legalization of prostitution is created to undermine the role of pimps, but it has limited success. Amsterdam is famous for its red light district, as it is a tourist attraction. Despite that, the city is reducing the number of prostitutes. In other cities there are red light districts as well. Read more…

It is not surprisingly that you have heard that smoking pot is legal in the Netherlands. Yes, the government tolerates using drugs (that does not mean it is legal), but there are strict laws about drugs. The Dutch law distinguishes soft drugs and hard drugs. Soft drugs such as cannabis (hemp, weed, pot, marijuana) and magic mushrooms are legal to use and possess as long as it is maximal 5 gram. Only coffee shops (no, it has nothing to do with the black liquid coffee) are permitted to sell soft drugs. Never buy drugs on the street: it is not tested and therefore not safe. Hard drugs such as cocaine and heroin are illegal.

Government Crackdown on Marijuana in the Netherlands: Amsterdam’s War on Weed

The Netherlands — and in particular its capital, Amsterdam — has long been thought to have some of the world’s most liberal marijuana policies. But today, the country’s government is clamping down on the weed industry. Police are raiding growers far more often, authorities are requiring “weed passes” to discourage marijuana tourism, and unprecedented numbers of so-called “coffeeshops” — where the sale of small amounts of marijuana is tolerated — are being forced to shut down.

VICE News visited Amsterdam to see what effects the new restrictions are having. After speaking to coffeeshop owners — one of whom has to close his shop because he’s technically too close to a school — we went to a weed festival and visited the home and greenhouse of Doede de Jong, one of the country’s few outspoken growers.

“Soft drugs should be legalized; hard drugs on prescription”, November 1997 European Parliament.

NOTE: cannabis edibles are sometimes available in the form of “space-cake” usually. Also, Amsterdam is where it will be found, if at all. However, this is a very minor part of the cannabis trade there and has never been associated with juvenile cannabis usage. The usual method of using cannabis is called “smoking”. There is virtually no chance a casual visitor to a cannabis coffee shop would accidentally buy and consume cannabis edibles thinking it was a regular pastry or cake.

For many foreigners, it takes a few months to completely get over the fear of police when using marihuana there (marijuana).
